I become involved with children’s books on a professional level when I moved to London after graduating and started working in publishing for Scholastic UK. Not only did we publish original titles but we bought paperback and book club rights all over the world, including Dutch and German language titles, and American and Australian works. It was here that I met and worked with authors and illustrators of children’s books who ignited a lifelong passion for youth literature. I have worked as publicist, copy editor, editor, rights manager, managing editor, writer, reviewer, teacher and teacher librarian for more than 25 years and am still learning every day.
I have been a practising teacher librarian in Brisbane high school for the last 20 years. I have been working with books all my life and can say that I know and love them as objects, as works of art, and as a collaboration of writers, editors, designers, artists and finally of readers.
I am passionate about the importance of books for children. I was a Children’s Book Council of Australia judge 2013/14 for the Children’s Book of the Year awards. Currently I am on the panel for the Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards, children’s books category. I also run the Last Tuesday Book Club for adults who love children’s books. I review for Magpies magazine, Reading Time and have a small spot on 4MBS radio.
